A New Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders at Tarzana Treatment Centers

Tarzana Treatment Centers (TTC) announces the opening of a new Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) that will expand our service offerings. A wraparound program that addresses mental health (MH) and substance use disorders (SUD), the PHP is led by TTC’s Clinical Director, Dr. Ken Bachrach, and staffed by capable treatment professionals.

Tarzana Treatment Centers and the New PHP

Celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2022, TTC believes in the nonprofit organization’s continuing evolution, particularly efforts to provide integrated healthcare services to underserved communities. Applying this perspective to the new Partial Hospitalization Program, Dr. Bachrach explains that he “views this program as filling an important gap in the continuum of care by allowing individuals to live at home and in the community while still receiving intensive, high-quality help and support.”

Also referred to as Day Treatment, the PHP at Tarzana Treatment Centers, Inc. runs six hours a day, five days a week. Such an intensive program offers structure and support for people requiring this care level. A multi-disciplinary clinical team staffs the Partial Hospitalization Program at TTC, offering treatment services from the morning through the early afternoon. The Essential Role of the PHP Assessment

As designed by a team of experienced clinicians, the Partial Hospitalization Program starts with an in-depth assessment of mental health and substance use disorder patients. For example, in the mental health PHP, patients receive a full psychiatric assessment to determine their ongoing needs in the evidence-based program.

In the SUD PHP, patients receive a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment of their substance disorder history. Such assessments help the PHP clinical staff develop an individualized treatment plan and experience for each patient.

Tarzana Treatment Centers is in-network with most insurance providers and benefits programs, including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Beacon Health Options, Cigna/Evernorth Behavioral Health, Healthnet, Magellan Health Services, MHN, Medicare, Optum, United Behavioral Health. Indeed, the goal of TTC is to work with patients to find an affordable option and make treatment a possibility.

Partial Hospitalization Program = Evidence-Based

As a viable alternative to residential or inpatient treatment, a PHP does not require an overnight stay. After the completion of each day’s program, PHP patients return home. Moreover, a PHP offers a wide variety of evidence-based treatment services. Indeed, the goal of the Partial Hospitalization Program is to help patients develop life skills and find balance.

From a substance use disorder perspective, a PHP is an appropriate choice for patients transitioning from an inpatient or residential SUD treatment program. Moreover, it can help someone coming out of an inpatient detox program. Such a program helps patients to avoid a relapse episode and a return to substance use.

The PHP treatment services provide an opportunity to develop internal coping skills and identify external triggers (people, places, and things) that endanger their recovery. Additionally, patients attend groups designed to foster relapse prevention, address any history of trauma, and develop the tools to live a sober life.

The PHP Program Offers Daily Support with Group Therapy and Individual Counseling

From a mental health perspective, patients receive more time and engagement than standard outpatient services. Hence, PHP is an appropriate choice for patients transitioning from inpatient psychiatric stabilization or a residential treatment program. In addition, PHP provides daily structure and a safe destination for patients requiring additional support.

Throughout the week, patients attend groups to develop healthy coping skills and improve interpersonal relationships. In addition, groups focus on increasing a patient’s capacity for independent living. As a structured program, the PHP offers effective skill-building groups. Moreover, these groups help patients transition back to productive lives in the community. Patients also participate in individual psychotherapy and counseling sessions.

PHP Evidence-Based Services for SUD and MH include:
  • Structured Daily Schedule of Activities
  • Group Therapy
  • Individual Therapy and Counseling
  • 12-Step Introduction
  • Comprehensive Assessment and Treatment Planning
  • Psychiatric Assessment and Medication Management
  • Case Management + Discharge Planning

Overall, PHP services help improve functioning while boosting self-esteem, so patients feel better about themselves and can recognize their progress. Once the program is finished, the TTC treatment team designs a recovery-oriented or mental health aftercare plan to help patients continue to progress. Given such tools, patients are ready to meet the challenge of returning to their homes and jobs.
