What is International Overdose Awareness Day?

International Overdose Awareness Day is observed globally every year on August 31. It serves as a somber reminder of lives lost to overdose and urges action for prevention. For Tarzana Treatment Centers (TTC), the day highlights our mission to protect adults and youth from the dangers of drug use, especially opioids. We honor those who have passed while providing families and communities with tools to save lives.

At the same time, TTC offers SUD (substance use disorder) treatment services to help curb the overdose epidemic. In addition to providing treatment for adults and youth in need, TTC also raises awareness about the risks associated with substance use. In the age of fentanyl abuse, through community outreach and prevention initiatives, we aim to save lives and protect families.

The History of International Overdose Awareness Day

International Overdose Awareness Day started in 2001 in Melbourne, Australia. What began as a local effort quickly grew into a global movement supported by governments, nonprofits, and healthcare providers. Today, events are held in more than 100 countries.

According to the CDC, overdose remains one of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States. This fact makes the annual observance both urgent and necessary.

International Overdose Awareness Day Awareness and Action

Every year, SAMHSA stresses the importance of prevention, treatment, and recovery support. Their Overdose Awareness Week coincides with International Overdose Awareness Day, emphasizing that lives can be saved through education and quick access to care.

The DEA also emphasizes International Overdose Awareness Day, describing it as an opportunity to “raise awareness of overdoses, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and acknowledge the grief felt by families.”

Tarzana Treatment Centers takes these words seriously. For over fifty years, TTC has delivered comprehensive services that address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. From medically supervised detox to youth prevention programs, we remain at the forefront of this crisis every day.

Why International Overdose Awareness Day Matters

For TTC, International Overdose Awareness Day is more than just a remembrance. It serves as a reminder that every overdose can be prevented. Families often come to us after seeing loved ones struggle with opioids or other substances. By providing treatment, counseling, and support for recovery, we help turn moments of despair into stories of resilience.

The official campaign site states that the goal for the day is “raising awareness and reducing stigma.” TTC believes that stigma often keeps people from seeking help. Breaking the silence can save lives. Our work ensures that individuals understand recovery is possible and that resources are accessible.

International Overdose Awareness Day and the Path Forward

On International Overdose Awareness Day, TTC encourages everyone to help spread awareness. Here are three steps you can take to make a difference:

  • Learn about the warning signs of an overdose and how to respond.
  • Share information with friends and family to reduce stigma.
