The Case for Maintenance, in Brief Form

Let’s talk Suboxone and Methadone, and be blunt about it. Opioid addiction is tough to beat, and a lot of addicts die during the detox/relapse/detox cycle. This is especially hard on prescription drug addicts whose addiction started due to legitimate medical issues, and may have even graduated to heroin use.

The 12 Step process for treating addiction is important. Above all else, it helps addicts to find the core reasons that they use drugs so they can work toward recovery. The problem is that motivation for recovery is key to getting there and cravings for opioids are often intense, which pulls addicts out of treatment before they are half way through. They want to recover, but they can’t.

Suboxone and Methadone Maintenance, coupled with counseling, relieves those cravings and helps addicts to focus on the motivation to recover. It gives them the chance to build on that motivation so they can achieve long-term recovery. Abstinence is nice, but too many opioid addicts die trying to get there. Maintenance gives more addicts the chance to recover, so anyone taking that road should be grateful and ignore the nay-sayers.
