California Hub and Spoke Grant Awarded to TTC
Tarzana Treatment Centers (TTC) was awarded a grant by the California Department of Health Care Services (DCHS) to implement the “Hub and Spoke” model for opioid addiction treatment in Los Angeles County over the next two years. TTC will be expanding treatment services in our locations to meet the needs of the clients that will be served at spoke offices. The goal of this new effort is to make effective treatment for opioid addiction available where it is lacking now. It will team Narcotic Treatment Programs (NTP) with medical provider offices throughout LA County to provide services funded by Medicare, Private Insurance, and Drug Medi-Cal.
Heroin and prescription opioid addiction and abuse has been a growing problem and hit crisis proportions during the past 5 years. While treatment methods have improved greatly during that same period, availability has been scarce in rural and some urban areas. Until now.
Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) employs several types of medication. Research has shown and TTC has proven that outcomes can improve greatly when Methadone is used along with residential or outpatient rehab. Buprenorphine Maintenance has had similar success. Outpatient Detox works for some individuals using the same treatment and motivation model. Vivitrol is available post-detox to reduce cravings and decrease the chance of a relapse. And Naloxone can save the lives of addicts in the event of an overdose.
The Hub and Spoke model has NTP’s as “Hubs” and medical offices that are qualified to dispense these medications as “Spokes”. The program makes it possible for patients to get treatment from the Hub by visiting a Spoke location. Specialized opioid addiction treatment services will be handled by the Hub, and trained staff at the Spoke will carry out the dispensing of medications and some other services. When looked at on a large, statewide scale, this program has the potential to make great strides in ending the opioid crisis.
Drug Medi-Cal will cover the Hub and Spoke services, making it available to a great many individuals suffering from opioid addiction. It’s important to keep in mind that, while we’re getting Hub and Spoke ready, TTC provides Drug Medi-Cal covered services at our locations. These services include residential detox and treatment, outpatient treatment, case management, and recovery support.
