Vivitrol for Women in Alcohol and Drug Treatment

by James Heller 29. August 2012 14:05
The various aspects of alcoholism and opiate addiction happen faster for women.  Because of this, extra factors need to be considered when providing treatment for women, especially when children are involved.  Many of these factors can be minimized by including Vivitrol in alcohol and drug treatment for women.

The female human body processes alcohol and opiates differently than the male counterpart.  It takes lower quantities and less time for intoxication to occur, withdrawals appear faster and stronger, and dependence and “hitting bottom” appear sooner to the first use.  Social factors, coupled with alcohol or opiate cravings, can also make resisting relapse much more difficult.

Alcohol and opiate cravings are major relapse triggers for both men and women suffering addiction.  But women commonly face social situations that involve peer pressure, predators, and even violence that invite relapse.  While these situations and other forms of stress may be difficult to avoid, craving reduction can reduce the chance that a relapse will occur.

Tarzana Treatment Centers provides Vivitrol for alcohol and opiate craving reduction.  Alcoholics, heroin, and prescription painkiller addicts relapse in large part due to cravings.  By removing this trigger, women can better focus on core issues that keep them drinking or using drugs.  It also takes away the added pressure to drink or use in social situations.

Tarzana Treatment Centers in Los Angeles provides a full array of health care services including adult and youth alcohol and drug treatment.  We specialize in treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, and have two primary medical care clinics in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley and specialized services for HIV/AIDS care.  If you or a loved one needs help with alcohol dependencedrug addiction, or co-occurring mental health disorders or from other services we offer, please call us now at 800-996-1051 or contact us using our secure contact form.

Telemedicine services are also available with online medical care, online mental health treatment, and online alcohol and drug treatment.

Medi-Cal Covers Vivitrol Treatment

by James Heller 20. August 2012 08:30
At Tarzana Treatment Centers, our goal is to provide healthcare to anyone in need.  One of the services we are known for is alcohol and drug treatment, which includes Vivitrol treatment.  This monthly Naltrexone injection reduces alcohol and opiate cravings and is covered by Medi-Cal.  Many who once felt hopeless are now in recovery and improving their lives.

We take pride in the fact that we help thousands of individuals, from all walks of life, every year.  Far too many have lost jobs and family, and have no health care coverage other than Medi-Cal.  Alcohol or drugs have dragged them into a world of despair.  A number of them will suffer multiple relapses because, even if they enjoy being sober, cravings lead them back to alcohol, heroin, or prescription pain killers.

The road back to treatment gets longer every time an alcoholic or a drug addict relapses.  When finances, legal issues, or relationships are a problem, the addicted mind will make them think that alcohol and drugs are the only answer.  So when they complete treatment, any craving for alcohol or their drug of choice threatens sobriety.  Constant relapses eat away at confidence, and convince them that there is no use in trying to improve their lives.

Medi-Cal has approved coverage for Vivitrol treatment at Tarzana Treatment Centers to help this group of individuals, among others.  Vivitrol takes cravings out of the picture during treatment, allowing patients to focus on core issues that keep them drinking and using drugs.  Once they get past the false belief that they don’t deserve better, it is more likely that they will want to take better care of themselves.  This gives them a better chance at long-term recovery and an improved life.

Vivitrol with Medicare and Medi-Cal Coverage

by James Heller 17. August 2012 08:24
For those eligible for Medicare and Medi-Cal most healthcare expenses are fully covered.  This can be very good news for those who suffer from alcoholism or prescription pain killer addiction.  At Tarzana Treatment Centers, we provide Vivitrol treatment services so they can begin the process of recovery without cravings that can lead to relapse.

Vivitrol is Naltrexone, administered monthly by injection.  After medical detoxification for alcohol or opiates, if necessary, Vivitrol reduces cravings for these drugs.  Alcohol and opiate cravings are major triggers for relapse during the early months of recovery.  Craving reduction removes distractions, which improves chances at long-term sobriety.

Medicare is the Federal program that covers seniors and seriously disabled individuals.  Medi-Cal is the California state Medicaid program for people who meet low-income and asset requirements for eligibility.  Those who qualify for both are known as “Medi-Medi” or “dual eligible”.  Medicare is the primary coverage, and Medi-Cal provides secondary coverage.  The combined coverage is important for many who might not otherwise be able to afford necessary treatment.

A growing number of seniors suffer from substance use disorders and many of them live on fixed incomes.  Whether alcohol or drug abuse is the problem, their retirement years can be an emotional torture.  Medi-Medi coverage for Vivitrol gives them the chance to enjoy the senior years without being bound by addiction.

An accident may cause a person to become disabled, for another example.  If painkillers were prescribed for severe pain, this person will likely form an opiate dependence.  No matter how innocent the circumstances, they are now a prescription drug addict.  When the pain is gone, the addiction needs to be treated at some point.  Vivitrol treatment at Tarzana Treatment Centers will aid in the recovery process, and allow for better focus on therapies for the original disability.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Tarzana Treatment Centers is you are Medi-Medi eligible and have a substance use disorder.

Tarzana Treatment Centers Telehealth Program

by James Heller 11. July 2012 12:39
Connecting patients face-to-face with health care providers can be a challenge at times.  This is especially true when the patient suffers from mental health or substance use disorders.  Telehealth is a great solution whether the individual is already in treatment or is delaying the start of treatment.

Telehealth is a broad term for health care that is provided via email, phone, data transfer, or video conference.  The main benefit for patients is that they can be anywhere for treatment, as long as they have a computer with internet access or a phone available.  Tarzana Treatment Centers is currently using several telehealth delivery methods, and we plan to take advantage of more as they become available to us.

Tarzana Treatment Centers’ Telehealth Program makes it possible for patients in residential alcohol and drug treatment to visit with offsite providers without leaving the building.  Each patient has a secure account on the LiveVisit video conference application, and can meet with clinic physicians or licensed mental health professionals.  We also use telehealth video conferencing for outpatient clients.

Sufferers postpone getting treatment for mental health and substance use disorders more often than you might think.  When they finally do go to that first treatment session, almost all of them realize that the delay was unnecessary.  Tarzana Treatment Centers’ Valley Tele-Treatment Program (VTP) makes that first session more convenient.  Individuals can receive treatment via VTP for up to 90 days, or they may choose to start face-to-face sessions after that first one.
For more information, please call 818-654-3821 or email vtp@tarzanatc.org today.

Convenient Vivitrol Treatment

by James Heller 2. July 2012 15:03
Motivation for recovery can change in an instant for alcoholics and opiate addicts.  They’ll say they want Vivitrol treatment to reduce cravings and help them focus on treatment.  The addict brain then does everything it can to change that decision.  Because of this, Tarzana Treatment Centers makes every effort to speed the process from decision to Vivitrol injection.

According to the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs (ADP) in the excerpt below, a collaboration of effort is required to treat a patient successfully with Vivitrol:

“Collaboration between substance abuse treatment providers and primary care physicians and clinicians on behalf of alcohol-dependent individuals is key to obtaining the best treatment outcomes for this chronic, relapsing disease.”

<Read the entire article for details about Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) when you finish this>

Patients must be assessed for Vivitrol treatment by qualified medical personnel.  Tarzana Treatment Centers’ alcohol and drug treatment program has licensed medical professionals on staff daily.  This minimizes the time between decision and assessment.  Every step like this toward getting the actual injection helps a patient to resist thoughts suggesting to not go through with the decision.

Vivitrol is available by prescription only, which is the next step toward injection.  Our daily staff of medical personnel includes licensed prescribers.  This minimizes another possible waiting period, and may even eliminate it if the assessor and prescriber is the same person.  The only step left is to receive the Vivitrol injection, and we keep a stock ready for new patients.

Collaboration between providers is easy at Tarzana Treatment Centers because they all work in the same facility and use the same software to track patient care.  Nobody can promise that you will get a Vivitrol injection the same day you make the decision, but we make it possible.

Vivitrol Services Featured on the KPCC Madeleine Brand Show

by James Heller 27. June 2012 14:27
Tarzana Treatment Centers and Vivitrol were featured on the Madeleine Brand Show on KPCC Public Radio.  You can read about the topic and listen to the segment at this link:

At some point, every alcoholic and opiate (heroinpain killers) addict has a desire to quit drinking or using drugs.  Most of them don’t know how to get help or that they can get addiction treatment at low or no cost, leading to a feeling of hopelessness.  If that desire to quit passes without getting help, they can wind up in a downward spiral and eventually lose everything.  The addiction can take a strong hold on them.  If they find their way to a traditional detox-to-aftercare treatment program, it may require Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).

When individuals have a difficult time with relapse after alcohol or opiate detox, recovery can seem out of reach.  Some will repeatedly enter detox treatment, with a serious desire to recover from alcohol dependence or drug addiction.  Alcohol and opiate cravings are a major trigger for relapse, and can strike both during and after detox.  For the individuals we’re describing in this article, cravings are also a major distraction during treatment.  So they rarely achieve long-term recovery.

We are committed to the promotion of Vivitrol treatment because we have witnessed the positive results for so many of these patients.  Several individuals who had been to detox more than five times have now been sober during Vivitrol treatment for more than 6 months at a time.  That is a big achievement for this group.  Every sober moment they get in treatment will provide them with tools to stay sober.  Relapse may not be a thing of the past in these cases, but recovery is finally in reach.

Vivitrol - We Have You Covered

by James Heller 22. June 2012 07:37
When life and financial situations take a turn for the worst, most people do what they can to support themselves until they can get back on their feet.  Others don’t have much of a personal safety net and enroll in public assistance programs.  Some turn to alcohol or drugs as an escape and become dependent.  In these cases, addiction can make for a long road back to a normal life.

Two factors that keep alcoholics and heroin addicts from achieving long-term recovery are money and cravings.  They think they can’t afford treatment, so they don’t bother calling a facility.  If they do get into treatment and complete medical detoxification, they may relapse shortly thereafter because the cravings are so powerful.  Many of these individuals give up if a loved one doesn’t inform them of the options that are available.

Tarzana Treatment Centers has solutions for both barriers to recovery.  It is likely that you qualify for public assistance if you are out of work and can’t afford treatment.  We can get you started with detox right away under low-cost and no-cost public contracts.  Alcohol and drug treatment is covered by Cal-WORKs and Medicare, along with several other programs.  The goal of these programs is to help you get clean and sober so you can get back on your feet.

Since cravings may cause relapse, we also encourage the use of Vivitrol for qualified patients.  Vivitrol blocks receptors in the brain to reduce alcohol and opiate cravings, and works for 30 days with one injection.  We have low-cost and no-cost treatment contracts for Vivitrol, and can get you started when you are ready to discharge from detox.

If you are using alcohol or drugs, and are suffering some tough financial times, the only guarantee is that things will get worse.  Today is the day to get started, and Tarzana Treatment Centers has you covered.

Rodney King – Alcoholic Death can be Sudden

by James Heller 20. June 2012 09:34
Rodney King has spoken about his alcoholism and drug abuse issues for a few years.  He has appeared on many TV and radio programs, including Celebrity Rehab, and we’ve seen him publicly go between sobriety and relapse a few times.  We are going to bypass what made Mr. King a household name.  We will instead discuss how alcoholism plagued him, and what can prevent future tragic losses.

When King had a lot of money, he tried expensive rehabs.  But the treatment didn’t help.  He tried to publicly go through addiction treatment on television, which looked somewhat promising for a while.  But he was dealing with alcohol-related legal issues a few months later.  King was like most alcoholics who never achieve long-term sobriety.  Sadly, the death toll is very high.

If Rodney King died by accidentally drowning in a pool while he was drunk, then it highlights the urgency with which alcoholics should seek help.  Any delay can lead to a sudden and tragic loss.  It is difficult to sugar coat these things, so we prefer to state it clearly.  Alcoholics too often say “That won’t be me”, only to be taking a final breath the next day, filled with regret.

Alcoholics who drink heavily to cover deep-seated emotions usually have trouble focusing in treatment.  The urge to drink is great due to alcohol cravings.  So craving reduction may help them to achieve long-term recovery.  One effective tool for this is Vivitrol, which is a monthly injection of Naltrexone.  Vivitrol removes the distraction of cravings so patients can explore core feelings in alcohol treatment.

Tarzana Treatment Centers is a Vivitrol provider and has seen some amazing results.  Success stories cross all social, gender, and age lines.  Some of our mental health treatment patients have been on Vivitrol treatment and sober for several months, where they previously struggled achieving only weeks of sobriety.  In addition to being safer from accidents, our Vivitrol clients have reported that they get more out of treatment when cravings are out of the way.

Vivitrol FDA Approved for Opiate Relapse Prevention

by James Heller 20. October 2010 13:05
Tarzana Treatment Centers in Los Angeles is thrilled at the news that the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Vivitrol for use in opioid addiction treatment.  The evidence was clear to us that Vivitrol reduced opiate cravings, but the FDA went one step further in approving it for the “prevention of relapse to opioid dependence.”  This means that we can finally say what we’ve also known for a long time; Vivitrol prevents relapse.

Tarzana Treatment Centers offers Vivitrol for alcohol treatment and opiate treatment as part of our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program.  It is a Naltrexone injection taken monthly that reduces alcohol cravings and opiate cravings.  This allows individuals in recovery to focus on addiction treatment, and offers a better chance at long-term recovery.  For more information about the FDA approval and Vivitrol, click the link below for the press release by Vivitrol manufacturer, Alkermes.

Telemedicine Uses – Alcohol Treatment

by James Heller 2. September 2010 14:00
Individuals from all social and economic levels can suffer from alcohol dependence.  When they know they need treatment, some of them can’t access it either because they don’t have time or worry about the social stigma of being an alcoholic.  Recovery may be the only thing that saves their family, job, or finances, though, so they should consider telemedicine as an option.

The homeless people you see on the street are only the public face of alcoholism.  One may work in the office or cubicle next to you, or even live in your own home.  It is estimated that over 1 in 10 Americans suffer today.  No matter who they are, at some time, hopefully, they realize that they need alcohol treatment.  Sadly, many will postpone or decline this addiction treatment for several reasons.

Entering alcohol treatment is still wrongly stigmatized as a weakness for a large segment of society.  Individuals in positions of authority and possibly well known, in business and politics, very often place public status over their own health, and think they will be okay without treatment.  But for every one individual who seems to be “living a party” and still making a living in the news, there are thousands who will lose everything.

Successful alcohol treatment does require a time commitment from patients and their loved ones.  The patient needs to attend individual and group sessions to work through life issues that will prevent relapse.  Family and friends need to also attend groups to work on themselves as well as to provide support for the patient.  The resistance is not so much about attending the sessions, but more about the travel time and coordination of schedules that makes people nervous.  When one knows they need treatment, they should get it.

Tarzana Treatment Centers in Los Angeles provides telemedicine for individuals who have these reasons, and many others, to not seek alcohol treatment.  Sessions are conducted by video conference over the browser-based TherapyLiveVisit application, powered by MDLiveCare.  Participants in telemedicine only need a computer with a webcam and internet connection.  All sessions are secure and confidential, running behind several layers of encryption.

These individuals who need help with alcohol abuse or dependence can now get it before problems mount too high.  Eliminating regular trips to an alcohol treatment center solves the stigma and time issues.  There is no need to explain sudden regular “nights out” to those who may pry, and all sessions can be conducted at home or work.  Travel time is eliminated, along with the hassle of loading the family in a car.  Also, distant family members can participate in family sessions, which is a great benefit.

Telemedicine at Tarzana Treatment Centers is not limited to addiction treatment.  We also provide online mental health treatment and online medical care.  Our goal is to see that those who need treatment can get it.
