California Health Care – Medi-Cal and the Affordable Care Act (ACA)

by James Heller 25. September 2012 08:42
When provisions of the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) go into effect in 2014, Medi-Cal will begin covering about 1.5 million new beneficiaries in California alone.  In addition, the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 will more-likely be enforced due to the ACA.  This means that Medi-Cal will be required to cover many more individuals who need mental health care and substance use disorder treatment.

These are important changes that, if handled properly, can benefit a large number of California citizens who have gone without vital mental health treatment due to lack of financial ability.  Tarzana Treatment Centers is proud to have our very own President, Albert Senella, taking a lead position to help the State organize what could be a very complicated situation.  His decades of health care and funding experience has given him a unique perspective of the changes that need to take place.

The California Healthline article, “Mental Health, Substance Abuse Treatment Changing”, details of the challenges and spells out the possible solutions.  It is an interesting look at differing approaches the State, treatment facilities, and professional organizations are taking to address health care funding.  We hope you will take a few minutes to become educated on this important topic.

Tarzana Treatment Centers in Los Angeles provides a full array of health care services including adult and youth alcohol and drug treatment.  We specialize in treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, and have two primary medical care clinics in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley and specialized services for HIV/AIDS care.  If you or a loved one needs help with alcohol dependencedrug addiction, or co-occurring mental health disorders or from other services we offer, please call us now at 888-777-8565 or contact us using our secure contact form.

Medicare Preventative Services at Tarzana Treatment Centers

by James Heller 24. September 2012 08:49
Medicare covers preventative care services that can help you to live healthier and happier in your senior years.  Better yet, you can choose the provider for any of these health care services at any time.  Tarzana Treatment Centers invites you to consider our clinics in the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys for these services.

Preventative care is a broad term describing health care services that are meant to help you avoid problems in the future.  Medicare covers annual office visits, screenings, flu shots, and other preventative services.  The list of services and detailed information can be found on this Guide to Medicare’s Preventive Services.

Since screenings are meant to confirm or eliminate the existence of some form of ailment, your preventative care provider is an important choice.  You want to be sure that your provider can treat you or quickly refer you for treatment in the event of a positive test result.  Your health deserves your focused attention, and we can make that convenient.

Tarzana Treatment Centers is a health care integration provider.  Patients who come to our clinics know that they will receive more than just quality medical care.  They are also comforted with the knowledge that we provide mental health, substance use, and HIV treatment services, along with many other services.

We hope that your preventative care finds you and keeps you in good health.  It is our goal, though, to be prepared to provide you with the best treatment you can get when you need it.  So we provide a wide array of health care services using the latest methods and technology.  You can be certain that your physical and mental health is in good hands at Tarzana Treatment Centers.

If Doctors Would Diagnose Addiction

by James Heller 5. September 2012 14:10
If you consider that there are an estimated 22 million Americans with a drug or alcohol problem, you might assume that doctors regularly diagnose and treat them.  Reality is, though, that most doctors have never been trained to in addiction treatment, and usually treat only the symptoms of the disease.  Fortunately, some new treatments involving medications may change this sad situation.

One big problem with alcoholism and drug addiction is that so many medical problems result from them.  Substance abuse negatively affects different parts of the body, depending on the drug being used.  Alcohol abuse, without exaggeration, harms every cell in the body.  To the untrained in addiction medicine, the symptoms of these abuses might appear as primary problems, only requiring common treatments.  For example, a doctor may prescribe specialized medication for a bleeding ulcer and schedule a follow-up visit.

Another problem with addiction is that alcoholics and drug addicts are not quick to admit their problems.  Even if a doctor asks about drinking and drug use habits, these patients will minimize or deny it.  Short of the patient arriving at 9:00am and smelling of alcohol, or having injection track marks up and down their arms, untrained doctors will not see a reason to investigate.  The answer is often accepted as true and the doctor looks to heal the symptom.

The result is that alcoholics and drug addicts get temporary relief from negative symptoms of their disease, but don’t receive, at the very least, guidance from their doctors on how to prevent them in the future.  The worst result is that people die every day from the negative effects of alcoholism and drug addiction.  Most of them could have been saved had they been given early treatment for the primary disease of addiction.

According to this article, there is possible good news on the horizon.  There is an effort to attract doctors to the addiction treatment field, and to promote addiction medicine as a recognized subspecialty.  Medical treatment and new prescription drugs are proving to be effective means of helping addicts to recover.  Counseling for the psycho-social aspects of the disease is still important, but detox and craving reduction medications, like Vivitrol, have become very beneficial in the early days of recovery.

Tarzana Treatment Centers provides Vivitrol treatment for alcohol and opiate craving reduction, for example.  This follows medical detoxification, which is important to avoid the severe effects of withdrawals.  We have seen some great success stories from patients who previously struggled with relapse after their first Vivitrol injection.

Imagine if doctors could diagnose addiction from the symptoms they normally treat.  They could make a referral to a detox facility, followed with Vivitrol for eligible patients, and maybe residential or outpatient treatment.  Patients tend to listen to doctors more than they would even to their most beloved family members.  Hopefully, the effort mentioned above can spread so more of those who suffer can get the treatment they need.

Youth and Family Services at Tarzana Treatment Centers

by James Heller 3. August 2012 07:11
When the health of family members is a concern, you want to trust their health care only to quality providers.  This is especially true for children and seniors.  It is also helpful if all of your health care providers are at one location.

Tarzana Treatment Centers provides many of the services you need to maintain good physical and mental health.  We also contract with several public funding sources so we can provide these services to anyone who needs them.

Starting with our medical care clinics, physicians can attend to your physical health care needs in a clean and comfortable setting.  If you suffer from a mental health disorder, our licensed professionals are available for therapy.  Alcohol and drug addiction treatment is also available, including medical detoxification and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).  For individuals who are HIV positive, our well-renowned HIV Services can help manage your special needs.

Growing up can be difficult.  Our Youth Services staff specializes in treating teen alcohol and drug abuse, as well as adolescent mental health issues.  These problems can tear the family apart, so our youth programs are built to repair the bonds that have been broken.  Family members learn to accept one-another and work together, which strikes at the core of substance use disorders.

We provide senior health services covered by Medicare and Medicare Advantage.  Along with medical care, mental health treatment and substance abuse treatment services are available.  These issues often go ignored by family members and seniors suffer needlessly.  We will provide services ranging from short-term therapy to residential treatment.

Tarzana Treatment Centers accepts Medi-Cal, Healthy Way LA (HWLA), and a few other forms of public funding for health care services.  You can call to find out if you are covered.  If you are not currently enrolled in a program, we can help you to apply.  We also accept most forms of private insurance, and private payment on a sliding scale based on your ability to pay.

Please call today.

LA Care eConsult Project

by James Heller 10. July 2012 07:22
A project is now underway in Los Angeles that will improve the speed and efficiency with which Los Angeles residents receive medical care.  LA Care started the eConsult project in preparation for the expected increase of new patients at local clinics due to health care reform and other program implementations.  Results from a successful preliminary pilot project suggest that eConsult will result in reduced wait times and fewer unnecessary face-to-face visits with specialists.

Tarzana Treatment Centers is pleased to be participating in the eConsult project.  It is another way we remain on the cutting edge of healthcare information technology.

Technology in healthcare is advancing with big leaps since the turn of the century.  With greater security, telemedicine is fast becoming a necessary tool for health care providers.  For example, store-and-forward data transfers allow for simple and secure communication between providers.  LA Care’s eConsult project uses store-and-forward technology via a web interface for Primary Care Providers (PCP) to exchange patient information with specialists.

Instead of giving a patient a direct referral to a specialist, the PCP sends an eConsult request to the specialist.  The specialist is notified of the request and can  ask further questions of the PCP and send treatment information back to the PCP or recommend that the patient come in for a visit with the specialist.  This is  an over-simple example because some specialties will require more back and forth communication between the PCP and specialist..    In many cases, though, patients will no longer need to wait for an appointment with a specialist to get input from a specialist about their condition..

An  18 month preliminary pilot project conducted by LA Care resulted in an approximate 60% reduction in appointment wait times.  About half of the specialty referral requests were resolved using eConsult rather than requiring a face-to-face visit with the specialist.  Specialists were able to respond quickly, and PCPs felt better equipped to address their patients’ specialty needs.  More details about the project can be found at this link:

Medicare and Medicare Advantage Services

by James Heller 6. July 2012 08:23
Tarzana Treatment Centers accepts Medicare and Medicare Advantage for a variety of healthcare services.  Primary medical care is certainly a priority for seniors to maintain good health.  We also cover medically necessary treatment for drug addiction and mental illness

The senior years can be very enjoyable.  This time of life also comes with many changes, both personal and environmental.  The environmental changes include relocation, loss of friends and family, financial concerns, and even the amount of medical care you need.  What this means is that you need to take care of yourself and remain aware of how environmental changes are affecting you.  We aim to help you through these issues so they don’t become the focal point of your senior years.

Mental health concerns arise for seniors because of the changes they face.  Obviously, when a long-time spouse or friend passes on there is grief to deal with.  Depression can accompany the grief even for the strongest of characters.  When the spouse who handled the finances and other concerns passes, it can leave the surviving spouse with great anxiety.  Sadly, too many seniors suffer loneliness due to infrequent visits from family members.

Drug addiction can seemingly come out of nowhere for seniors.  Individuals who rarely had a cocktail may be prescribed a painkiller for chronic pain.  Initially, this is fine and the pain is relieved.  But when they feel another type of relief, like an escape from the feeling of loneliness, they may continue to use the drug in increasing amounts and become addicted.  If their doctor refuses to continue filling the prescription, they may even resort to using illegal drugs.

For seniors suffering mental health or drug addiction disorders, or co-occurring disorders, physical health can quickly become a casualty.  It is important that you be treated for these problems right away so you don’t suffer needless medical problems.

We staff quality mental health professionals who will handle your case with sensitivity in a confidential setting.  Our variety of treatment methods for drug addiction, including medical detoxification, counseling, and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), provides for a tailored treatment plan that will help you get back into life.

Integrated Medicare Covered Services

by James Heller 2. July 2012 08:02
Retirement is a time in life when seniors can relax, travel, enjoy family, or anything else they want or have the means to do.  Along with this milestone comes the human condition of aging.  When positives and negatives mix in this way, it’s always a good idea to minimize the negatives.  Taking care of your health, the physical and the mental, needs to be a priority so the golden years shine.

Tarzana Treatment Centers accepts Medicare for medical and mental health care services, so you can enjoy those later years of life.

All through life we are told to take good care of ourselves so we can live long and be healthy.  Exercise and a balanced diet in adult years can minimize medical health issues for seniors.  Even so, our bodies deteriorate over time and we can be more susceptible to illnesses as we get older.  So seniors need to pay regular visits to a physician so these problems don’t overshadow the good times.

Even if you are in good physical health, though, events that come with aging can cause mental health to suffer.  Depression and anxiety might be caused by the loss of loved ones, the need to relocate, or financial issues, for example.  Seniors will often deny that mental health issues exist because they view them as a weakness, having been mentally stable all of their lives.  If their physician refers them to an outside mental health professional for therapy, they are likely to decline.

Tarzana Treatment Centers understands the sensitive nature of senior mental health problems, and we can help you to feel more comfortable about them.  Our physicians are trained to spot symptoms that may indicate mental health issues, and can provide quick referrals to one of our mental health professionals.  This saves you time, travel, and the headache of added paperwork.  You can also rest assured that your treatment is completely confidential and handled under one roof.

Another valuable benefit is that your health professionals work together and collaborate on treatment plans for you.  You can be confident that we will provide you with the most effective health care for all of your needs.
