LA Care eConsult Project

by James Heller 10. July 2012 07:22
A project is now underway in Los Angeles that will improve the speed and efficiency with which Los Angeles residents receive medical care.  LA Care started the eConsult project in preparation for the expected increase of new patients at local clinics due to health care reform and other program implementations.  Results from a successful preliminary pilot project suggest that eConsult will result in reduced wait times and fewer unnecessary face-to-face visits with specialists.

Tarzana Treatment Centers is pleased to be participating in the eConsult project.  It is another way we remain on the cutting edge of healthcare information technology.

Technology in healthcare is advancing with big leaps since the turn of the century.  With greater security, telemedicine is fast becoming a necessary tool for health care providers.  For example, store-and-forward data transfers allow for simple and secure communication between providers.  LA Care’s eConsult project uses store-and-forward technology via a web interface for Primary Care Providers (PCP) to exchange patient information with specialists.

Instead of giving a patient a direct referral to a specialist, the PCP sends an eConsult request to the specialist.  The specialist is notified of the request and can  ask further questions of the PCP and send treatment information back to the PCP or recommend that the patient come in for a visit with the specialist.  This is  an over-simple example because some specialties will require more back and forth communication between the PCP and specialist..    In many cases, though, patients will no longer need to wait for an appointment with a specialist to get input from a specialist about their condition..

An  18 month preliminary pilot project conducted by LA Care resulted in an approximate 60% reduction in appointment wait times.  About half of the specialty referral requests were resolved using eConsult rather than requiring a face-to-face visit with the specialist.  Specialists were able to respond quickly, and PCPs felt better equipped to address their patients’ specialty needs.  More details about the project can be found at this link:

Medicare and Medicare Advantage Services

by James Heller 6. July 2012 08:23
Tarzana Treatment Centers accepts Medicare and Medicare Advantage for a variety of healthcare services.  Primary medical care is certainly a priority for seniors to maintain good health.  We also cover medically necessary treatment for drug addiction and mental illness

The senior years can be very enjoyable.  This time of life also comes with many changes, both personal and environmental.  The environmental changes include relocation, loss of friends and family, financial concerns, and even the amount of medical care you need.  What this means is that you need to take care of yourself and remain aware of how environmental changes are affecting you.  We aim to help you through these issues so they don’t become the focal point of your senior years.

Mental health concerns arise for seniors because of the changes they face.  Obviously, when a long-time spouse or friend passes on there is grief to deal with.  Depression can accompany the grief even for the strongest of characters.  When the spouse who handled the finances and other concerns passes, it can leave the surviving spouse with great anxiety.  Sadly, too many seniors suffer loneliness due to infrequent visits from family members.

Drug addiction can seemingly come out of nowhere for seniors.  Individuals who rarely had a cocktail may be prescribed a painkiller for chronic pain.  Initially, this is fine and the pain is relieved.  But when they feel another type of relief, like an escape from the feeling of loneliness, they may continue to use the drug in increasing amounts and become addicted.  If their doctor refuses to continue filling the prescription, they may even resort to using illegal drugs.

For seniors suffering mental health or drug addiction disorders, or co-occurring disorders, physical health can quickly become a casualty.  It is important that you be treated for these problems right away so you don’t suffer needless medical problems.

We staff quality mental health professionals who will handle your case with sensitivity in a confidential setting.  Our variety of treatment methods for drug addiction, including medical detoxification, counseling, and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), provides for a tailored treatment plan that will help you get back into life.

Integrated Medicare Covered Services

by James Heller 2. July 2012 08:02
Retirement is a time in life when seniors can relax, travel, enjoy family, or anything else they want or have the means to do.  Along with this milestone comes the human condition of aging.  When positives and negatives mix in this way, it’s always a good idea to minimize the negatives.  Taking care of your health, the physical and the mental, needs to be a priority so the golden years shine.

Tarzana Treatment Centers accepts Medicare for medical and mental health care services, so you can enjoy those later years of life.

All through life we are told to take good care of ourselves so we can live long and be healthy.  Exercise and a balanced diet in adult years can minimize medical health issues for seniors.  Even so, our bodies deteriorate over time and we can be more susceptible to illnesses as we get older.  So seniors need to pay regular visits to a physician so these problems don’t overshadow the good times.

Even if you are in good physical health, though, events that come with aging can cause mental health to suffer.  Depression and anxiety might be caused by the loss of loved ones, the need to relocate, or financial issues, for example.  Seniors will often deny that mental health issues exist because they view them as a weakness, having been mentally stable all of their lives.  If their physician refers them to an outside mental health professional for therapy, they are likely to decline.

Tarzana Treatment Centers understands the sensitive nature of senior mental health problems, and we can help you to feel more comfortable about them.  Our physicians are trained to spot symptoms that may indicate mental health issues, and can provide quick referrals to one of our mental health professionals.  This saves you time, travel, and the headache of added paperwork.  You can also rest assured that your treatment is completely confidential and handled under one roof.

Another valuable benefit is that your health professionals work together and collaborate on treatment plans for you.  You can be confident that we will provide you with the most effective health care for all of your needs.

Latinos Aging in Place

by James Heller 12. January 2011 10:15
The Latino population in the United States is aging as it grows.  This will pose problems for many individuals in low-income communities who will suffer illnesses disproportionate to the greater population.  The presentation linked below describes efforts to prevent illness and promote wellness in these communities.

by James Heller 19. November 2010 12:29

Tarzana Treatment Centers in Los Angeles will participate in the 2010 World AIDS Day by holding a celebration at our central location in Tarzana, as we have for many years.  The theme for 2010 is Universal Access and Human Rights.  Much of the world’s HIV infected population lacks treatment because they don’t have access to it or suffer human rights violations.  Increased public awareness of these issues helps to battle the global HIV and AIDS epidemic, so we encourage all to attend.

Here are the details:

New HIV Medical Care Clinics in the Antelope Valley

by James Heller 12. November 2010 15:22
Tarzana Treatment Centers, Inc. in Los Angeles (TTC) plans to open one HIV medical clinic in Palmdale and a second clinic site in Lancaster in the Antelope Valley (AV).  Tarzana Treatment Centers will provide low and no cost primary medical care, specialty care, dental care, case management, mental health, and transportation assistance to Antelope Valley residents living with HIV/AIDS.  This is yet another example of our commitment to provide integrated health services to underserved individuals in Southern California.

Tarzana Treatment Centers already treats thousands every year for medical, mental health, substance use, and behavioral disorders.  Our expertise doesn’t stop with providing a wide array of services, though.  We integrate services so patients can receive all of them “under one roof”.  Even if patients need long-term residential alcohol and drug treatment, for example, we provide the health care services they need so treatment is not interrupted.

The original goal of health care integration was to provide worry-free treatment to substance abuse and behavioral health patients, and it has evolved to include most common health care needs.  By applying this to HIV/AIDS services we set the stage for patients to live long and fruitful lives.  This is because many of them live with substance use and/or mental health disorders which can deter them from getting the treatment they need.  By integrating health services, we can treat all issues for each patient.  And in most cases, we can treat them all at the same time.

With an expert staff of medical and behavioral health providers, our new clinic sites in the Antelope Valley will serve 350 patients living with HIV/AIDS in the first year of operation.  As with the HIV services we provide in the San Fernando Valley, patients will have access to needed medications, medical care, mental health treatment, alcohol and drug treatment, and more.  The Office of AIDS Programs and Policy (OAPP) grant that funds the clinics allows us to also provide services for oral health needs, lab work, and transportation as well.

The inclusion of case management for medical and mental health is what most benefits our patients living with HIV/AIDS.  Individuals who have medical and mental health issues that require treatment, for example, can schedule appointments in the same time frame at one location.  A Case Manager oversees patients’ treatment to ensure they get all of the services they need.  This means convenience and better health for HIV positive individuals seeking health care at Tarzana Treatment Centers.

Comprehensive assessment services at Tarzana Treatment Centers give our Case Managers a clear picture of the health care needs for each new patient.  After medical and psychological assessments, lab tests, and basic interviews, we know the primary and secondary issues that patients face.  We can then admit patients into our various programs as needed, and Case Managers can follow their progress and adjust treatment as may be necessary.

Health care becomes a top priority for individuals when they discover they are HIV positive.  Tarzana Treatment Centers seeks to decrease the number of those who postpone treatment for any reason with these convenient clinics.  When more of the HIV positive community receives treatment, we have a chance to limit spreading of the virus.  So our HIV treatment services not only help the individuals we treat, but the public at large as well.

The mission of Tarzana Treatment Centers at our HIV medical clinics is to help individuals to live long and healthy lives.  We provide a setting that encourages them to look forward at life, in a positive manner.    Our patients are therefore empowered to live normal lives and continue with the treatment they need.  We make them active players in treatment which gives them a better sense of self and ownership.

Tarzana Treatment Centers in Los Angeles provides a full array of health care services including adult and youth alcohol and drug treatment.  We specialize in treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, and have two primary medical care clinics in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley.  If you or a loved one needs help with alcohol dependence, drug addiction, or co-occurring mental health disorders, please call us now at 800-996-1051 or contact us here.

Telemedicine Uses – Teledermatology

by James Heller 8. October 2010 14:22

Teledermatology is a health technology tool used by dermatologists all over the world. With this, dermatologists are able to reach out to patients in need of care from thousands of miles away- distance is not a barrier to treatment. Using teledermatology makes it possible for a patient to receive treatment from a dermatologist within only a few hours or days, instead of having to wait several weeks or months. Another benefit of using teledermatology is efficiency – it allows dermatologists to treat more patients in less time.

One teledermatology method is to participate in a live online interactive treatment session with the patient (web camera, computer with internet connection). Another way is through email. The dermatologist views a high-resolution image sent to their email, usually by the patient’s primary care physician. In many cases, the doctor can view the patient’s ailment and give a diagnosis for treatment, then prescribe medication to the patient. All of this can happen without the necessity of a face-to-face visit. Additionally, the dermatologist can give a consultation through email or phone.

Teledermatology is very beneficial because a patient can begin treatment much sooner and be on their way to better health. Without teledermatology, unfortunately for many patients, the ability to see a dermatologist face-to-face usually involves having an appointment date in the far future, a long wait time in a doctor’s office, or not at all due to travel issues from home to the doctor’s office. Teledermatology is a convenient and efficient way for a patient to receive much needed healthcare.

Tarzana Treatment Centers in Los Angeles provides teledermatology services as part of our commitment to integrated healthcare.  Offering our patients speedier and more efficient dermatology services through telemedicine is yet another example of our efforts to stay on the cutting edge of health technology.  Treatment for skin problems is now available in the San Fernando Valley and beyond.

With 42 percent of Americans living in areas underserved by dermatologists, says John Bocachica, M.D., "A qualitative study led by a research team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center suggests that patients want full access to all of their medical records; are willing to make some privacy concessions in the interest of making their medical records completely transparent; and, going forward, fully expect that computers will play a major role in their medical care, even substituting for face-to-face doctor visits (Walker J, Ahern D, Le LX, Delbanco T. J Gen Intern Med. 2009 Jun;24(6):727-732)." He is chief of dermatology and teledermatology, Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC), Anchorage, Alaska, and chairman of the American Telemedicine Association's (ATA) Teledermatology Special Interest Group (SIG).
