Prescription Abuse
Prescription drugs are meant to heal. The problem of prescription abuse arises when a patient deviates from the dosage prescribed by a doctor, or uses alcohol or other drugs to enhance the euphoric effects. This is always a risk when taking drugs that can be habit forming.
Tolerance of prescription drugs is a natural occurrence where the body needs more of a drug to achieve the original effect it had. This is a problem because it tempts the patient to use more of it rather than discussing the lessened effect with his or her doctor.
Abuse generally occurs in a binging cycle, and is not necessarily linked to a physical addiction to prescription drugs.
Prescription Addiction
Drug addiction is loosely defined as continuing use of a substance that causes problems, due to physical dependence. Prescription addiction is the result of prescription abuse coupled with physical drug dependence. Opiates and benzodiazepines are two types of drugs that can lead to prescription drug dependence.
With addiction, the body actually needs the drug to avoid painful and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. Due to tolerance, the patient will seek more of a particular drug or a stronger dosage. This quest can often lead a law-abiding citizen to illegal activities to satisfy their need.
Medical detoxification in drug treatment is needed to end the cycle of prescription addiction.
