Questions & Answers

Community Education

Alcohol and Drug Education

Staff from Tarzana Treatment Centers provides comprehensive education on alcohol and drugs to adolescents, adults and families in alcohol and drug treatment, and in the community surrounding Los Angeles County, Orange County, the San Fernando Valley, and Antelope Valley. During the early part of alcohol and drug treatment, an emphasis is placed on understanding the addictive process and on learning how to utilize a variety of treatment strategies to improve functioning and facilitate sobriety. Staff members frequently conduct presentations at public schools, civic group meetings, healthcare facilities, universities and professional conferences.

Tobacco Related Education

The Tobacco Control Project offers a variety of services, one of which is aimed at reducing or stopping the use of tobacco and nicotine. Services include smoking cessation classes, support groups and small group sessions to increase awareness of tobacco issues. In addition, individual counseling is available to assess a person's level of nicotine addiction and to design a customized program to help him or her quit smoking. These services are offered at no cost to clients in alcohol and drug treatment and to members of the community at large.

Perinatal Outreach and Education Program

The Perinatal Outreach and Education Program (POEP) provides prenatal health education outreach and postpartum services and advocacy to women of childbearing age to improve birth outcomes.

HIV/AIDS Education

Tarzana Treatment Centers' HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Project provides educational workshops and training for all clients in alcohol and drug treatment and staff. A Mobile HIV Antibody Testing Team and a Harm Reduction Program augment HIV Education and Prevention Services.

Family Education

Weekly family education groups are held to both educate and involve family members in alcohol and drug treatment. This affords family members an opportunity to learn about addiction and how it impacts the entire family. They learn the need to take care of themselves while examining their role in the recovery process.

Parenting Classes

This class is offered to parents who wish to improve their parenting skills, and also satisfies the legal requirement for those mandated to complete a parenting course. The class consists of ten weekly, ninety-minute sessions. Participants learn both about child development and specific techniques that are helpful in becoming an effective parent. Each session is designed to allow time for discussion of the material presented that week and discussion of specific issues participants may be facing with their children.
