National Women’s Health Week

by James Heller 7. May 2013 13:07
The importance of women’s health will take center stage during the week of May 12-18, this year.  National Women’s Health Week is observed to promote various aspects of women’s health issues and the advances in treatment for them.  As usual, Tarzana Treatment Centers will take part with an event and by promoting our services for women.

We provide specialized treatment for women with substance abuse and mental health disorders.  Our addiction counselors and mental health professionals are trained to address gender-specific issues.  Residential treatment is available for qualified women with children, as well.

In honor of Women’s Health Week, Tarzana Treatment Centers will hold a Health Fair at our facility on Baird Ave. in Reseda.  Health professionals will be on hand to provide free screenings.  We will also hold raffles and there will be live music.

Hepatitis Risk Assessment and Testing

by James Heller 26. April 2013 09:32
Are you at risk for hepatitis?

It doesn’t take very much exposure to become one of the millions of Americans who have contracted the disease.  It’s blood-borne, meaning that individuals who inject drugs or engage in unprotected sex are at high risk.  It only takes one injection or unprotected sexual encounter, in fact, to become infected.

At Tarzana Treatment Centers, our mission includes health education as well as treatment.  Here is everything you need to find out if you are at risk, how you can be tested, and where you can get treatment if you test positive for hepatitis.

Obviously, if you fit into one of the groups mentioned above, you are at risk.  Blood-borne diseases can be tricky, though, and can pass from person to person in many ways.  For example, if you were born between 1945 and 1965, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) suggest that you get tested for hepatitis C because the infection rates in that group are 5 times higher than all others.  So we are providing a link, here, where you can see if you are at risk in other ways.  Click the link below for the assessment:

If you need a test, Tarzana Treatment Centers has you covered.  We are providing free hepatitis testing, funded by the CDC, at our Central location in Tarzana, at our needle exchange sites, and at our medical clinics.  You can find the addresses to these sites on our Locations page <link> or by calling 818-996-1051.

For those who test positive for hepatitis, we provide medical care at our Reseda Medical Clinic.  We have many years of experience treating medical issues that result from drug use and sexual transmission, so you can rest assured that you are in good hands.  And, since we are an integrated healthcare facility, we can provide you with care for related health issues.

Valley Tele-Treatment Program (VTP)

by James Heller 26. February 2013 15:10

by Charles Yeh, MSW, ASW, CADC II, Project Coordinator

The Valley Tele-Treatment Program (VTP) of Tarzana Treatment Centers utilizes tele-communications (phone, e-mail, and video-conferencing) to assess for substance abuse issues, and provide immediate individual counseling if appropriate.  By making access easier and more comfortable, and by combining the role of brief intervention with treatment, VTP can better help individuals at crucial moments concerning the risks and harm related to substance use.  Participation may be as brief as one telephone conversation, or extend up to six months, depending on each individuals need.

A first goal of VTP is to reach more individuals, and to reach them sooner, to provide individualized prevention and early intervention for alcohol and substance use before consequences become severe, or individuals become dependent on alcohol or other drugs.  Because it is not necessary for individuals to travel to our facility in person, the initial apprehension individuals may feel about speaking with a certified alcohol & drug counselor is greatly reduced.  A second goal of VTP is to make treatment more accessible for individuals at all levels of substance use severity.  Not only does VTP allow individuals experiencing physical or transportation barriers to more easily access treatment, the flexibility of the program offers broad effectiveness for treatment:

  1. Low risk for harm—VTP offers a safe and confidential way to explore present issues and help to access the options available for help
  2. Moderate risk for harm—VTP offers counseling to help build coping skills, and to facilitate participation in an ongoing supportive community for recovery
  3. Severe risk for harm—VTP offers interim counseling to help maintain motivation and commitment to recovery when individuals are still waiting to receive residential or onsite outpatient treatment
  4. Already in recovery—VTP offers continuing support to individuals going through a difficult transition

VTP services are available in English and Spanish, and are no cost for qualifying individuals.  If you would like to access services, refer someone, or learn more about VTP, please call (818) 654-3821, or email vtp@tarzanatc.org.

New to Medicare?

by James Heller 17. January 2013 11:38
One thing never seems to change with Medicare.  Every year, a lot of people become eligible for this insurance coverage, and many of them become very confused.  What is Medicare? What is covered? Where do I go for medical care?
The information is all online and on brochures from the government, but it’s the rare individual who reads it all.  So Tarzana Treatment Centers will help to get you started with ease.

In case you didn’t know, we provide integrated health care services, which means that you can get medical, mental health, and substance use services at our locations.  Many of the services we provide are covered by Medicare plans, and Medi-Cal in case you are eligible for both programs.  The great benefit of coming to our clinics for medical care is that you won’t need to be referred out if you have mental health or substance use disorders.

Maybe the best recent news is that we provide the new Medicare Preventive services.  These services are designed to help you maintain good health, and to enable early treatment of problems that may arise.  These services include flu shots, smoking cessation, and screenings for cardiovascular problems, diabetes, or HIV, among many others.  And, as we mentioned above, we can quickly treat you for any medical or mental health needs that are discovered.

Tarzana Treatment Centers invites you to contact us for information about your covered Medicare plan services and an appointment.  We can get you started with preventive services, and help you to plan for your future health care needs.

Newton Shootings and Mental Health

by James Heller 19. December 2012 10:34
The tragic event in Newtown, CT, where a man killed 20 children and 6 adults, has spawned a new wave of stories about access to mental health treatment. You may have read that treatment isn’t available, or that it’s too expensive and inaccessible.  The truth is that treatment is available and affordable for anyone who needs it, and Tarzana Treatment Centers works hard to spread the word.

When we see the capacity of the human mind come out in such a terrible manner, the first question is if there was a history of mental illness.  After all, a healthy person would never even consider committing this horror.  So we get distracted by trying to get answers to how this could happen in a civilized society. Then we get mad because, “Something should have been done to prevent this”.  And then we can accept that, sometimes, bad things happen that can’t be explained.

The good news is that this process is very healthy.  We’re grieving as a nation because the crime was unfathomable.  We were caught by surprise.  The discussions with friends and strangers alike help us to get past the disbelief, resistance, anger, and to finally accept that it happened.  If you are stuck on any part of the grieving process, you should seek short-term therapy.  It will help you process the emotions, and you will learn how to cope better in the future.

The bad news is that many people who could use that short-term therapy or a long-term form of treatment for severe illness won’t seek it.  It may be a fear of being stigmatized, which won’t happen because treatment is confidential, and we care enough to keep it that way.  They may fear that they can’t afford it, which often keeps them from beginning the research for help, so they never find out that public funding, including Medicare, can usually cover them.

Family members might make a call for a loved one, but they often don’t follow through.  This is a tragedy because it may just take one therapy session to see an improvement.  For most new admissions to mental health treatment, this offers hope that they didn’t think existed, and they gladly enter long-term therapy. So you only need to get them to the facility, and we can do the rest.  You may be surprised how easy it is to do this.

We have many programs at Tarzana Treatment Centers for mental health treatment, covering minor cases of depression to severe mental disability.  We accept Medicare, Medi-Cal, Healthy Way LA, and several other forms of public funding.  If you or a loved one is sick, treatment is needed.  It starts by picking up the phone or filling out a contact form.  As soon as you take that first step, you will feel the weight begin to lift from your shoulders.  We know this from years of experience.

It may never come to light what caused Adam Lanza to commit the unthinkable, and it probably doesn’t matter on a personal level.  What matters most is that we are healthy as a society, and we take care of each other when tragedy strikes.  We offer our services so you, our neighbors, friends, and family, can stay healthy when the going gets tough.  And we have set our services up so you can access them and afford them.

Underage Drinking Warning Sign

by James Heller 15. November 2012 11:10
Saving Lives’ Drug and Alcohol Coalition is a local non-profit organization that seeks to prevent youth substance abuse. For several months, Tarzana Treatment Centers has partnered with them to educate youth and the community about adolescent substance use and abuse. We have most recently joined forces to co-sponsor an innovative new alcohol warning sign to prevent underage drinking. Teen alcohol abuse, every year, kills and injures more youth and young adults than all illicit drugs combined.

A warning sign has been produced to raise awareness of the issue and to prevent deaths, alcohol related injuries and disability, drunken driving accidents, sexual assaults, and alcohol related violent crimes.  It includes eight languages that represent the diversity of the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles at large.  It warns that buying, selling, or providing alcohol to youth (under age 21) is a crime and punishable by fines and possible jail time.

The signs have been endorsed by the State Department of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC).  ABC has created a letter to be sent out to all alcohol retailers, recommending that they put these signs in their establishments, and help stop underage drinking.  After the press conference, all local retailers will receive a mailing about the sign and the associated underage drinking prevention campaign.

Tarzana Treatment Centers will train alumni, community volunteers, and collaborators to engage and educate local retailers in this effort.  These signs will be distributed across the San Fernando Valley, with a goal of having all of them displayed before mid-December.  We hope to make our message clear during the holiday season when drinking is on the up-swing.

Tarzana Treatment Centers in Los Angeles provides treatment for adolescent alcohol abuse as part of our Youth Services program.  Our services include treatment for mental health, residential and outpatient treatment, family counseling, and education among other services.

Medicare Preventative Services at Tarzana Treatment Centers

by James Heller 24. September 2012 08:49
Medicare covers preventative care services that can help you to live healthier and happier in your senior years.  Better yet, you can choose the provider for any of these health care services at any time.  Tarzana Treatment Centers invites you to consider our clinics in the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys for these services.

Preventative care is a broad term describing health care services that are meant to help you avoid problems in the future.  Medicare covers annual office visits, screenings, flu shots, and other preventative services.  The list of services and detailed information can be found on this Guide to Medicare’s Preventive Services.

Since screenings are meant to confirm or eliminate the existence of some form of ailment, your preventative care provider is an important choice.  You want to be sure that your provider can treat you or quickly refer you for treatment in the event of a positive test result.  Your health deserves your focused attention, and we can make that convenient.

Tarzana Treatment Centers is a health care integration provider.  Patients who come to our clinics know that they will receive more than just quality medical care.  They are also comforted with the knowledge that we provide mental health, substance use, and HIV treatment services, along with many other services.

We hope that your preventative care finds you and keeps you in good health.  It is our goal, though, to be prepared to provide you with the best treatment you can get when you need it.  So we provide a wide array of health care services using the latest methods and technology.  You can be certain that your physical and mental health is in good hands at Tarzana Treatment Centers.

Tarzana Treatment Centers in Los Angeles provides a full array of health care services including adult and youth alcohol and drug treatment.  We specialize in treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, and have two primary medical care clinics in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley and specialized services for HIV/AIDS care.  If you or a loved one needs help with alcohol dependencedrug addiction, or co-occurring mental health disorders or from other services we offer, please call us now at 800-996-1051 or contact us using our secure contact form.

Medi-Cal Covers Vivitrol Treatment

by James Heller 20. August 2012 08:30
At Tarzana Treatment Centers, our goal is to provide healthcare to anyone in need.  One of the services we are known for is alcohol and drug treatment, which includes Vivitrol treatment.  This monthly Naltrexone injection reduces alcohol and opiate cravings and is covered by Medi-Cal.  Many who once felt hopeless are now in recovery and improving their lives.

We take pride in the fact that we help thousands of individuals, from all walks of life, every year.  Far too many have lost jobs and family, and have no health care coverage other than Medi-Cal.  Alcohol or drugs have dragged them into a world of despair.  A number of them will suffer multiple relapses because, even if they enjoy being sober, cravings lead them back to alcohol, heroin, or prescription pain killers.

The road back to treatment gets longer every time an alcoholic or a drug addict relapses.  When finances, legal issues, or relationships are a problem, the addicted mind will make them think that alcohol and drugs are the only answer.  So when they complete treatment, any craving for alcohol or their drug of choice threatens sobriety.  Constant relapses eat away at confidence, and convince them that there is no use in trying to improve their lives.

Medi-Cal has approved coverage for Vivitrol treatment at Tarzana Treatment Centers to help this group of individuals, among others.  Vivitrol takes cravings out of the picture during treatment, allowing patients to focus on core issues that keep them drinking and using drugs.  Once they get past the false belief that they don’t deserve better, it is more likely that they will want to take better care of themselves.  This gives them a better chance at long-term recovery and an improved life.

Youth and Family Services at Tarzana Treatment Centers

by James Heller 3. August 2012 07:11
When the health of family members is a concern, you want to trust their health care only to quality providers.  This is especially true for children and seniors.  It is also helpful if all of your health care providers are at one location.

Tarzana Treatment Centers provides many of the services you need to maintain good physical and mental health.  We also contract with several public funding sources so we can provide these services to anyone who needs them.

Starting with our medical care clinics, physicians can attend to your physical health care needs in a clean and comfortable setting.  If you suffer from a mental health disorder, our licensed professionals are available for therapy.  Alcohol and drug addiction treatment is also available, including medical detoxification and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).  For individuals who are HIV positive, our well-renowned HIV Services can help manage your special needs.

Growing up can be difficult.  Our Youth Services staff specializes in treating teen alcohol and drug abuse, as well as adolescent mental health issues.  These problems can tear the family apart, so our youth programs are built to repair the bonds that have been broken.  Family members learn to accept one-another and work together, which strikes at the core of substance use disorders.

We provide senior health services covered by Medicare and Medicare Advantage.  Along with medical care, mental health treatment and substance abuse treatment services are available.  These issues often go ignored by family members and seniors suffer needlessly.  We will provide services ranging from short-term therapy to residential treatment.

Tarzana Treatment Centers accepts Medi-Cal, Healthy Way LA (HWLA), and a few other forms of public funding for health care services.  You can call to find out if you are covered.  If you are not currently enrolled in a program, we can help you to apply.  We also accept most forms of private insurance, and private payment on a sliding scale based on your ability to pay.

Please call today.

Healthy Way LA Mental Health Coverage for General Relief Recipients

by James Heller 1. August 2012 08:38
If you receive General Relief and suffer from a mental health disorder, you should not put off treatment.  You may be eligible to get free treatment through Healthy Way LA (HWLA).  Qualified individuals have already been automatically enrolled in HWLA and should have received a new member packet.

Tarzana Treatment Centers provides health care services covered by HWLA, including quality mental health treatment.  As your Medical Home, we can provide care for all of your medical needs and mental health in one location.  This means less time traveling to providers, and more of a friendly relationship with the people who will help you.  Our clinics are also clean and comfortable with friendly staff to assist you.

When we say that HWLA care is free, we mean that it is at no cost to you.  You can get medical care, mental health treatment, medications, and other managed care services at absolutely no cost.
All of the information you need to get started is at this link:

If you are unsure of your HWLA eligibility, our staff can see if you are enrolled.  If you are not, and you qualify, they will help you to enroll.  It takes less time than you would think if you make an appointment.  Even if you don’t qualify, and you receive General Relief, it is likely that you qualify for another program.  So you do not need to put off getting the care you need.  We can also help your loved ones, so bring them along.
