Medicare Preventive Services Help You Live

by James Heller 26. February 2014 10:57
As we approach and arrive at our senior years, we begin to understand why doctors always told us to take better care of our health.  Prevention is something we hear about all of our lives, and only a small percentage of us really take it seriously.  The good news is that many age-related health issues can be improved and avoided with preventive care services covered by Medicare.

Better health can always be found through exercise and an improved diet, of course.  There are other issues, though, that are not so easy to control.  It’s much more dangerous for seniors to get the flu, life events can cause depression, and smoking or earlier substance abuse can lead to a whole list of related health problems.  Preventive screenings, counseling, vaccinations, and lab tests help to diagnose or treat potential health risks before they become serious problems.

Using available preventive services improves your health, which leads to other benefits.  Your golden years should be spent enjoying life, so better health means fewer visits to care providers.  You have better things to do.  Just a wellness exam and flu shot will keep the doctor away for a while.  Good health means a more active lifestyle and less reliance on others to get around, as well.  So, preventive care really does give you more joy and freedom in life.

Tarzana Treatment Centers provides Medicare preventive care services at our Primary Care Clinics. We offer a wide variety of the covered services so you can experience that joy and freedom.  We look forward to seeing you soon.  Here is an alphabetical list:
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening
  • Alcohol Misuse Screening and Behavioral counseling Intervention in Primary Care
  • Annual Wellness Visit (Including Personalized Prevention Plan Services)
  • Bone Mass Measurements
  • Cancer Screenings
    • Breast Cancer (mammograms and clinical breast exam)
    • Cervical and Vaginal Cancer (pap test and pelvic)
    • Colorectal Cancer
    • Prostate (PSA blood test and Digital Rectal Exam)
  • Cardiovascular Disease Screening
  • Depression Screening in Adults
  • Diabetes Screening
  • Diabetes Self-Management Training
  • Glaucoma Screening
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Screening
  • Immunizations (Seasonal Influenza, Pneumococcal, and Hepatitis B)
  • Initial Preventive Physical Examination - “Welcome to Medicare” Preventive Visit
  • Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Cardiovascular Disease

Valley Tele-Treatment Program (VTP)

by James Heller 26. February 2013 15:10

by Charles Yeh, MSW, ASW, CADC II, Project Coordinator

The Valley Tele-Treatment Program (VTP) of Tarzana Treatment Centers utilizes tele-communications (phone, e-mail, and video-conferencing) to assess for substance abuse issues, and provide immediate individual counseling if appropriate.  By making access easier and more comfortable, and by combining the role of brief intervention with treatment, VTP can better help individuals at crucial moments concerning the risks and harm related to substance use.  Participation may be as brief as one telephone conversation, or extend up to six months, depending on each individuals need.

A first goal of VTP is to reach more individuals, and to reach them sooner, to provide individualized prevention and early intervention for alcohol and substance use before consequences become severe, or individuals become dependent on alcohol or other drugs.  Because it is not necessary for individuals to travel to our facility in person, the initial apprehension individuals may feel about speaking with a certified alcohol & drug counselor is greatly reduced.  A second goal of VTP is to make treatment more accessible for individuals at all levels of substance use severity.  Not only does VTP allow individuals experiencing physical or transportation barriers to more easily access treatment, the flexibility of the program offers broad effectiveness for treatment:

  1. Low risk for harm—VTP offers a safe and confidential way to explore present issues and help to access the options available for help
  2. Moderate risk for harm—VTP offers counseling to help build coping skills, and to facilitate participation in an ongoing supportive community for recovery
  3. Severe risk for harm—VTP offers interim counseling to help maintain motivation and commitment to recovery when individuals are still waiting to receive residential or onsite outpatient treatment
  4. Already in recovery—VTP offers continuing support to individuals going through a difficult transition

VTP services are available in English and Spanish, and are no cost for qualifying individuals.  If you would like to access services, refer someone, or learn more about VTP, please call (818) 654-3821, or email vtp@tarzanatc.org.

Newton Shootings and Mental Health

by James Heller 19. December 2012 10:34
The tragic event in Newtown, CT, where a man killed 20 children and 6 adults, has spawned a new wave of stories about access to mental health treatment. You may have read that treatment isn’t available, or that it’s too expensive and inaccessible.  The truth is that treatment is available and affordable for anyone who needs it, and Tarzana Treatment Centers works hard to spread the word.

When we see the capacity of the human mind come out in such a terrible manner, the first question is if there was a history of mental illness.  After all, a healthy person would never even consider committing this horror.  So we get distracted by trying to get answers to how this could happen in a civilized society. Then we get mad because, “Something should have been done to prevent this”.  And then we can accept that, sometimes, bad things happen that can’t be explained.

The good news is that this process is very healthy.  We’re grieving as a nation because the crime was unfathomable.  We were caught by surprise.  The discussions with friends and strangers alike help us to get past the disbelief, resistance, anger, and to finally accept that it happened.  If you are stuck on any part of the grieving process, you should seek short-term therapy.  It will help you process the emotions, and you will learn how to cope better in the future.

The bad news is that many people who could use that short-term therapy or a long-term form of treatment for severe illness won’t seek it.  It may be a fear of being stigmatized, which won’t happen because treatment is confidential, and we care enough to keep it that way.  They may fear that they can’t afford it, which often keeps them from beginning the research for help, so they never find out that public funding, including Medicare, can usually cover them.

Family members might make a call for a loved one, but they often don’t follow through.  This is a tragedy because it may just take one therapy session to see an improvement.  For most new admissions to mental health treatment, this offers hope that they didn’t think existed, and they gladly enter long-term therapy. So you only need to get them to the facility, and we can do the rest.  You may be surprised how easy it is to do this.

We have many programs at Tarzana Treatment Centers for mental health treatment, covering minor cases of depression to severe mental disability.  We accept Medicare, Medi-Cal, Healthy Way LA, and several other forms of public funding.  If you or a loved one is sick, treatment is needed.  It starts by picking up the phone or filling out a contact form.  As soon as you take that first step, you will feel the weight begin to lift from your shoulders.  We know this from years of experience.

It may never come to light what caused Adam Lanza to commit the unthinkable, and it probably doesn’t matter on a personal level.  What matters most is that we are healthy as a society, and we take care of each other when tragedy strikes.  We offer our services so you, our neighbors, friends, and family, can stay healthy when the going gets tough.  And we have set our services up so you can access them and afford them.

Help Others Find No Cost Health Care in Los Angeles

by James Heller 17. July 2012 13:19
This article will help you inform those in need to find no-cost health care in Los Angeles County.  Healthy Way LA (HWLA) is a health care program funded by L.A. County.  Qualifying individuals need not worry about co-payments and are provided with quality medical care and mental health treatment.  We want all who qualify to know that Tarzana Treatment Centers is an HWLA provider at our Northridge and Antelope Valley Primary Care Clinics.

Many individuals who qualify for HWLA are not aware that the program exists.  Some are aware of it, but don’t know how easy it is to enroll and begin treatment.  Others may not have a computer with internet access.  With your help, we can spread the word with little effort.

We are requesting that you go to the article linked below.  Please Share it with your Friends on Facebook and Followers on Twitter, or link to it on your website.  You can also print the article for someone who doesn’t have internet access.  Even if you forward this information to a group of people who don’t need the HWLA program, it is likely that your action will eventually help someone who does.

Tarzana Treatment Centers Telehealth Program

by James Heller 11. July 2012 12:39
Connecting patients face-to-face with health care providers can be a challenge at times.  This is especially true when the patient suffers from mental health or substance use disorders.  Telehealth is a great solution whether the individual is already in treatment or is delaying the start of treatment.

Telehealth is a broad term for health care that is provided via email, phone, data transfer, or video conference.  The main benefit for patients is that they can be anywhere for treatment, as long as they have a computer with internet access or a phone available.  Tarzana Treatment Centers is currently using several telehealth delivery methods, and we plan to take advantage of more as they become available to us.

Tarzana Treatment Centers’ Telehealth Program makes it possible for patients in residential alcohol and drug treatment to visit with offsite providers without leaving the building.  Each patient has a secure account on the LiveVisit video conference application, and can meet with clinic physicians or licensed mental health professionals.  We also use telehealth video conferencing for outpatient clients.

Sufferers postpone getting treatment for mental health and substance use disorders more often than you might think.  When they finally do go to that first treatment session, almost all of them realize that the delay was unnecessary.  Tarzana Treatment Centers’ Valley Tele-Treatment Program (VTP) makes that first session more convenient.  Individuals can receive treatment via VTP for up to 90 days, or they may choose to start face-to-face sessions after that first one.
For more information, please call 818-654-3821 or email vtp@tarzanatc.org today.

Latinos Aging in Place

by James Heller 12. January 2011 10:15
The Latino population in the United States is aging as it grows.  This will pose problems for many individuals in low-income communities who will suffer illnesses disproportionate to the greater population.  The presentation linked below describes efforts to prevent illness and promote wellness in these communities.

New HIV Medical Care Clinics in the Antelope Valley

by James Heller 12. November 2010 15:22
Tarzana Treatment Centers, Inc. in Los Angeles (TTC) plans to open one HIV medical clinic in Palmdale and a second clinic site in Lancaster in the Antelope Valley (AV).  Tarzana Treatment Centers will provide low and no cost primary medical care, specialty care, dental care, case management, mental health, and transportation assistance to Antelope Valley residents living with HIV/AIDS.  This is yet another example of our commitment to provide integrated health services to underserved individuals in Southern California.

Tarzana Treatment Centers already treats thousands every year for medical, mental health, substance use, and behavioral disorders.  Our expertise doesn’t stop with providing a wide array of services, though.  We integrate services so patients can receive all of them “under one roof”.  Even if patients need long-term residential alcohol and drug treatment, for example, we provide the health care services they need so treatment is not interrupted.

The original goal of health care integration was to provide worry-free treatment to substance abuse and behavioral health patients, and it has evolved to include most common health care needs.  By applying this to HIV/AIDS services we set the stage for patients to live long and fruitful lives.  This is because many of them live with substance use and/or mental health disorders which can deter them from getting the treatment they need.  By integrating health services, we can treat all issues for each patient.  And in most cases, we can treat them all at the same time.

With an expert staff of medical and behavioral health providers, our new clinic sites in the Antelope Valley will serve 350 patients living with HIV/AIDS in the first year of operation.  As with the HIV services we provide in the San Fernando Valley, patients will have access to needed medications, medical care, mental health treatment, alcohol and drug treatment, and more.  The Office of AIDS Programs and Policy (OAPP) grant that funds the clinics allows us to also provide services for oral health needs, lab work, and transportation as well.

The inclusion of case management for medical and mental health is what most benefits our patients living with HIV/AIDS.  Individuals who have medical and mental health issues that require treatment, for example, can schedule appointments in the same time frame at one location.  A Case Manager oversees patients’ treatment to ensure they get all of the services they need.  This means convenience and better health for HIV positive individuals seeking health care at Tarzana Treatment Centers.

Comprehensive assessment services at Tarzana Treatment Centers give our Case Managers a clear picture of the health care needs for each new patient.  After medical and psychological assessments, lab tests, and basic interviews, we know the primary and secondary issues that patients face.  We can then admit patients into our various programs as needed, and Case Managers can follow their progress and adjust treatment as may be necessary.

Health care becomes a top priority for individuals when they discover they are HIV positive.  Tarzana Treatment Centers seeks to decrease the number of those who postpone treatment for any reason with these convenient clinics.  When more of the HIV positive community receives treatment, we have a chance to limit spreading of the virus.  So our HIV treatment services not only help the individuals we treat, but the public at large as well.

The mission of Tarzana Treatment Centers at our HIV medical clinics is to help individuals to live long and healthy lives.  We provide a setting that encourages them to look forward at life, in a positive manner.    Our patients are therefore empowered to live normal lives and continue with the treatment they need.  We make them active players in treatment which gives them a better sense of self and ownership.

Telehealth Technology Provides Security and Simplicity

by James Heller 9. September 2010 13:21
Tarzana Treatment Centers in Los Angeles provides telemedicine services to qualified patients in alcohol and drug treatment, mental health treatment, and primary medical care.  After careful research of the technology available, we chose to partner with MDLiveCare in Florida so we could deliver services conveniently and securely at affordable rates.  The technology was a key in making our decision considering what our patients would need in order to use these services.

During our research of available telehealth technologies for video conference sessions, we were happy to discover that most of our services could be delivered through this medium.  Assessments of new patients entering addiction treatment or mental health treatment can be completed before they come to one of our locations.  This allows our staff to better prepare for their arrival, and saves patients critical time in on-site admissions time.  It can also be used for outpatient services for some patients.  We can also see qualified patients in primary medical care from their homes and offices.

The MDLiveCare technology is browser-based.  This means that patients simply need to open Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, or whatever they use on a daily basis, and log in to their account.  Once logged in, a simple interface makes it easy for them to schedule appointments with Providers, send and read secure messages with them, and view records.  Anyone who browses the internet should be able to use the interfaces we provide, known as MDLiveVisit and TherapyLiveVisit.

Much of the technology used for telehealth video conferencing today would be considered complicated by the everyday computer user.  Some require special software that, putting it simply, directly connects one specific computer with another over long distances.  This adds work for the patient in setting up the software, which may not go well and lead to a need for technical support.  Also, if the program crashes there is no backup means to connect to a session, creating a delay in services.  These are issues that patients do not want to deal with when they need health care.

The MDLiveVisit and TherapyLiveVisit interfaces that are used by Tarzana Treatment Centers require no initial setup on patient computers.  They only need a login ID and temporary password to get started.  Literally within minutes, patients can set an appointment to see one of our health care providers.  And, if the browser they are using happens to crash, they can switch to another to start or resume a session.  All of this simplicity is delivered with the same or better security as those described above.

The LiveVisit application was started using the popular Flash Player to deliver video.  This meant that almost anyone already had the software needed to send and receive video before they used LiveVisit.  To improve services, a switch was made to using the VSee video format in LiveVisit.  The new format uses less bandwidth, meaning that even patients with very slow internet access can send and receive smooth video.  Patients still do not need to install bulky software to use this advanced video format.

We chose to partner with MDLiveCare and use the LiveVisit telehealth applications because the simplicity and security satisfied our high standards in delivering services to patients.  The goal was to make getting treatment easier for patients, with almost no chance that problems will occur.  No special equipment is needed, either, other than an inexpensive webcam since high resolution is not necessary in LiveVisit.

Primary Health Care in Los Angeles

by James Heller 28. April 2010 13:18
Getting medical health care can be a problem for several reasons.  Cost, location, and lack of insurance are all reasons that individuals postpone or neglect health care.  Some may not want to get treatment from their regular physician for some ailments, as well.  The primary medical care clinics at Tarzana Treatment Centers can help in any of these situations.

We have two medical care clinics located in the San Fernando Valley (Northridge) and in the Antelope Valley (Lancaster).  At each clinic we provide health care services to the communities that are affordable and local.  Whether you need drug testing for your employees, treatment for HIV and other STDs, or injury and illness treatments, we can help.

The care we provide is confidential, caring, and convenient.  Our health care services also ensure a continuum of care to our patients in alcohol and drug treatment.  We also staff medical professionals with years of experience with HIV at our clinics to treat individuals utilizing our HIV services.
